How exciting is it to see minimalist living go mainstream?
CNN.com has just published an article by Maureen Jenkins: Living happily with less.
I had a lovely chat with the author, and am honored to be included in the piece. Also featured are Nicole Dunbar from Chicago, who downsized her expenses to pursue a more fulfilling career; and Duane Elgin, famed author of the simple living classic, Voluntary Simplicity.
It’s a wonderful article that addresses both the financial and emotional benefits of living with less—not just lower bills, but more freedom to choose how and where we work and live.
It also makes the point that voluntary downscaling “by its very definition suggests that those making such choices have the luxury to do so.”
That’s very true—I’m well aware that I have the good fortune to choose a pared-down lifestyle. It wasn’t forced upon me by economic hardship, a natural disaster, or some other unfavorable circumstance. But that’s exactly the point: although many of us don’t have to live with less, we want to. It makes us happier, more serene, more satisfied people.
Contrary to some of the comments, I don’t feel that simple living is a province of the rich. The siren call of consumption cuts across all income levels, and a broad spectrum of people—from minimum wage workers to middle managers to millionaires—can experience the joys and rewards of being a minsumer.
The article highlights the various reasons for choosing a lighter lifestyle (financial, career, sustainability, etc.), and I’d love for you to join the conversation over on CNN.com. Whether you’ve chosen minimalism to save the world, save time for your kids, or simply save space in your closet—let us know!
