Extreme Ways to Save

As many of you know, my first book (Frugillionaire: 500 Fabulous Ways to Live Richly and Save a Fortune) is about how to live (and love) a frugal lifestyle.

I enjoy talking about saving money just as much as minimalist living, and was thrilled when writer Melissa Neiman contacted me to request an interview.

The resulting article, 6 Extreme Ways To Save, is the top story on bankrate.com today. Please check it out, and learn how you can save $10,000 (or more) each year. After all, minimalism and frugality go hand in hand (the less stuff you buy, the more space and money you save!).

Many thanks to Melissa for including me in her fabulous article!

  • Congrats! That’s awesome. A wonderful time for something good like this to come your way.

  • Congratulations, Francine, and thanks for sharing!

You have wonderful, practical points outlined, such as paying with cash instead of credit and checking things out from the library instead of buying books/movies/music. Why buy when you don’t have to?

  • Great article! Congratulations!

  • What a wonderful article! I love your advice about ditching the car and taking public transportation. My husband and I have been a one car household for years. We utilize public transportation quite a bit. The money we have saved by only having one car has been quite impressive. Cars really are a money pit.

  • Fabulous! Congratuations on the article!

Thanks to everyone for the Congratulations! The interview was fun to do, and I always appreciate being included in an informative, well-written article. :-)

  • I enjoyed the article. I have a question: On which side of the coupon clipping argument are you? Thanks.

Willow, to be honest, I’m not much of a coupon clipper — mainly because I buy a lot of fresh fruits and veggies, rather than packaged stuff.

That said, if I happen to trip across a coupon for something I actually use (like shampoo), I’ll save it; and I always google for retailers’ coupon codes when shopping online. It’s always nice to score 15% off, or free shipping, with just a minute or two of surfing.

So cool!!!! I’m working up nerve to ditch our ancient car and keep the ancient SUV, which is much more practical, even if it is not fuel-efficient. We always seem to need cargo room for our art and hauling stuff around. But we don’t drive more than 8,000 miles per year, either. whattodo, whattodo…

Hi Meg! We downsized from two cars to one, and are now planning to go car-free. I’ve found that it helps to run the numbers, and figure out exactly how much you’ll save (in insurance, registration, maintenance, repairs, etc). Sometimes that’s all the incentive you need! :-)
